But that doesn’t make him a bankable cover photo. At least, not according to the news magazine, which decided to go for a more eye-catching image to illustrate this week’s feature story about the esteemed pediatrician and his popular parenting philosophy.

Instead, this week’s cover features Jamie Lynne Grumet, upright and staring at the camera as she nurses her nearly 4-year-old son while he stands on a chair. The title: “Are you mom enough?”

Naturally, the duo quickly dominated parenting websites, discussion boards and Twitter on Thursday, fuelling the eternally combustible debate over how long is too long to breastfeed, what makes a good mother and whether attachment parenting oppresses women.

The discussion’s tiring enough to put a baby to sleep.

Sears’ approach, developed with his physician wife, Martha, encourages parents to be responsive to a child’s emotional and biological needs through such practices as breastfeeding on demand, sling-wearing, co-sleeping and natural childbirth.

While plenty of commenters were outraged by the image, some parents saw it as a clever publicity stunt that didn’t reflect the subject of the story inside.

“Everything is getting lost in this except for the cover,” said Dee Brun, a mother of four from Kitchener, who questioned how a stylist could come up with the bizarre setup.

It is everyone else that has an issue with toddlers still feeding at the breast. Chances are that if you are still breastfeeding your 3 year old you will be gently or sharply ridiculed by friends and family as well as society. If you take it to heart you run the risk of becoming a closet feeder to avoid the negative innuendos and comments. This is sad because there is no harm in breastfeeding a young toddler. In fact many different philosophies on the matter are held. Le Leche League actually supports later feeding for a variety of reasons for moms who have the leisure to choose late breastfeeding.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the world average for breastfeeding is 4.2 years and they recommend that all children be breastfed for at least two years. More often than not an older child will suddenly stop wanting feeds without too much bother or discussion. In reality would it better to give your 3 year old a cheese burger and milk shake? Many mothers find that a sick child that still nurses at her breast can be comforted and soothed more readily.

The emotional benefits alone, of breastfeeding your 3 year old are reason enough for some mothers to continue. The argument on the other hand is that those children breastfed for longer may develop an overly dependent attachment for their mothers. Research amazingly enough has found the opposite to true. In fact such children are more likely to be independent and not show needy behaviors around their mothers.

Time managing editor Rick Stengel, meanwhile, called it an “arresting image” that was aimed at making a splash and noted breastfeeding is one part of the story.

“Judging by the reaction on Twitter this morning, some people think it’s great, and some people are revolted by it,” Stengel said in an interview with the Washington Post style blog.

“That’s what you want. You want people talking . . . Do I expect some people to be outraged? Sure.”

The cover mom, Grumet, is a 26-year-old mother of two from Los Angeles who follows Sears’ approach and practises extended breastfeeding.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Natural disasters, says Denyse Cote, are when women’s rights matter most. Which is why the sociology professor at the University of Quebec in the Outaouais agreed so readily to be part of Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean’s small official delegation to Haiti this week.

The invitation came only a week ago, and Cote admits she was surprised by it. But with deep ties to Haiti’s women’s movement, she felt it was important to travel to the Caribbean nation.

Sexual aggression and violence against girls and women often go hand in hand with the breakdown of social order during a catastrophe such as the Jan. 12 earthquake that pulverized parts of Haiti.

“We’ve heard a lot of architects and urban planners but they don’t think about these things. They don’t necessarily think about how to build a city that would be women friendly or family friendly, where schools are close to homes” for instance, she said.

But leaders must move forward on women’s issues even during disasters so that greater equality gaps don’t result in the aftermath of the catastrophe, she said. Cote acted as the Canadian delegate to a roundtable on women’s issues that Jean was to attend Monday in Port-au-Prince.

Unfortunately, domestic violence is very much alive and well — and thriving. According to the National Victims Center, one woman is raped every minute, and 30% of all women murdered in this country are murdered by their boyfriends or husbands.

Domestic violence is a particularly grim topic and a vicious crime, because it involves pain and suffering (even loss of life) inflicted by a friend, someone who claims to care, or a so-called loved one.

Many people ask, “Why don’t the victims just leave? Why do they stay?”

The Abuse We Don’t See

Usually by the time the physical abuse starts in a relationship, the emotional and psychological abuse has already destroyed all the dignity and self-esteem of the victim.

Victims feel ashamed and are embarrassed to tell others about their situations. They are fearful of leaving because of threats from their abusers and financial dependence.

In many instances, victims are manipulated to believe they deserve this treatment and it is somehow their fault. Abusers know exactly what to say and do to keep the abused in emotional captivity.

Victimizing the Victim

Victims view leaving as being more painful than staying, because of the imagined and real repercussions either from the perpetrator or from society at large.

Many people in the world still don’t understand domestic violence. Therefore, they victimize the victim further by blaming the victim or making comments like: “You should have just left.” “I would never be so stupid as to stay in an abusive relationship.” “That would never happen to me.”
Control

Domestic violence is about control — being mentally controlled by a significant other. That is the reason why, after leaving an abusive relationship, a victim will go back to her abuser an average of four times before she decides she has the mental strength to leave for good.
Teach them that love is not about control. Love is about wanting the very best for all concerned
The Price

According to a report from the American Medical Association, family violence costs this nation from 5 to 10 billion dollars annually in medical expenses, police and court costs, shelters and foster care, sick leave, absenteeism, and non-productivity.

Most people are good at being unhappy at work

There are so many people who are already unhappy at their work. So probably I don’t need to teach them since they are already so good at this. But for those who want to change bad habits a reminder sometimes is a good idea.
1 Work for JUST the money

When you work for JUST the money after 40 you will start to resent your work. Work will start to seem like an obligation. Everyone around you will feel like competition. The money will not be appreciated and it will be spent quicker. When you work JUST for the money, it is easy to lose track of one’s sense of purpose and values about their life and what is most important.
This is a great way to be unhappy at work especially for those over 40 who have been unhappy for many years at work due to society pressures and expectations.
2 Make money doing something you don’t care about

Make the money you need in ways which make no sense to you. Work in areas which the work is not coherent to you. That is, work in areas which do not make sense to you at the end of the day. Go to sleep after doing work all day which provides no joy or meaning. This will be great for restless sleep, worry and of course unhappiness about one’s work!

3 Ensure that your work really DOES NOT interest you

After 40, this is very important. Work which provides no interest will set you up for retirement and then a quicker death. Work which does not interest you will impact your sense of self, your happiness and affect how you relate to those around you. This will be great for becoming anti ‘social and unhappy.
After 40, ONLY work at things which clearly do not align your interests and abilities

4 Only work at things which you are good at

This is a great strategy for being unhappy at work. Do work which you are really good at but no longer interested in. This will keep you in dead end jobs for years JUST for the money. Human Resource policies around performance management will always make you the winner ensuring many more years of making money and unhappy work.

5 Have no sense of urgency about your life and work

This is another great way to stay unhappy at work. Just wait for good luck or better hope something will happen to make your life and work better without action a sure recipe for unhappiness!

6 Work in JOBS and careers after 40

This is one of the best ways to ensure unhappiness in mid ‘life. Just work in defined jobs with nice titles and even better career tracks with hopes to someday retire and finally be happy and do what you want. Just waiting for someday will almost guarantee your unhappiness at work.

7 Look forward to retirement

Plan your retirement and all the things you will finally be able to when you stop working. This is one of my best recommended strategies for unhappiness at work. For sure life or the economy will get in the way and you just might have to work forever at just jobs.

8 Actually, retire!

Just stop working and join activities with other retired people. Enjoy the good life. This is a great strategy for unhappiness. Soon a life without new goals or meaningful work and contribution will set in and the water will boil before you notice it. This will speed your progress towards unhappiness.
9 Work around people who enjoy what you don’t

This is a great way to become unhappy at work. Work in areas which everyone around you seems to enjoy except you. Soon you will feel like you are broken and that something is wrong with you. A sure path to unhappiness!

10 Have a job and DO NOT have your life’s work

This is my favorite. JUST have a job that one day you can retire from. For sure don’t think deeply about the world and where you want to make a greater difference especially after 40. Forget contribution, joy, meaning, and all those silly concepts of vocation. Just assume a job is work and the rest of your life happens after you get home.

Does this sound familiar?

Does your work fit into any of these ten steps? The good news is by following of course the opposite direction of these steps WILL ensure you a lifetime of happiness and joy and a sense that your work matters. Now this can ENABLE happiness!

Around the world, women and girls are victims of countless acts of violence. In a great many of these instances, the violence is not random — women and girls are victims because they are female. The range of gender-based acts of violence in conflict is devastating, occurring, quite literally, from womb to tomb. Among other abuses, violence against women includes: rape, sexual mutilation, purposeful infection with HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STI), forced impregnation, forced abortion, female genital mutilation (FGM), sexual harassment, trafficking, forced prostitution, dowry-related violence, domestic violence, battering, and marital rape. Violence against women and girls occurs in every segment of society — regardless of class, ethnicity, culture, country or whether the country is at peace or war.

Women’s bodies, deliberately infected with HIV/AIDS or carrying a child conceived in rape, have been used as means to undermine, disgrace and threaten the perceived enemy. In Rwanda , at least 250,000 — perhaps as many as 500,000 — women were raped during the 1994 genocide. more… Women often face violence in wartime due to the nexus between their gender and their other identities. In Bosnia , Muslim women were targeted for rape as part of the “ethnic cleansing” campaign to form a ethnically pure Greater Serbia. Over 20,000 women are thought to have been raped during the war.

Police say within minutes of starting the operation, Street Crimes found numerous people engaged in prostitution activity. Interestingly police say that the bulk of those arrested are from Sacramento and Bay area.

La violencia va in crescendo.

The Food and Drug Administration said baby-products maker Evenflo Co. failed to properly investigate some complaints involving women who reported receiving electrical shocks while using the company’s breast pumps. In an Aug. 25 warning letter released by the agency Tuesday, the FDA said it found manufacturing violations at two Ohio plants that make pumps used by women to express breast milk. The breast pumps are sold nationwide under the “Comfort Select” brand name. Evenflo, of Miamisburg, Ohio, is private firm that makes a variety of baby products including toys, high chairs, car seats and strollers.

The FDA warning letter stemmed from inspections of two Evenflo facilities in January and February. Since then, the FDA and the company have worked to address violations of FDA manufacturing rules, with Evenflo providing monthly updates to the agency.

During the inspections, the FDA found Evenflo wasn’t in compliance with the agency’s manufacturing practice rules, including “failure to review and evaluate all complaints” and for failing “to establish medical device reporting procedures for your breast pumps.” Companies are required to report problems with devices to the FDA.
The agency said it reviewed 37 complaints and, of those, 18 weren’t investigated by the company, including at least three reports of women receiving an electrical shock when using the breast pumps. The FDA said companies are required to investigate complaints that involve “the possible failure of a device to meet any of its specifications.”

Amy Neff, Evenflo’s associate general counsel, said the company does investigate its consumer complaints but said the problem was a “documentation issue.” In its letter, the FDA said the company’s response to the complaint-investigation problem is now “adequate.” However, on the medical-device reporting problem, the FDA said the company has yet to fully address the agency’s concerns.

PITTSBURGH – A woman is suing the Pittsburgh Public Schools because she says other students bullied her daughter about her weight, causing the girl to develop anorexia.

The woman and her daughter are not identified in the federal lawsuit filed Monday.

The woman claims several boys harassed her daughter while she was a student at Frick Middle School starting when she was in sixth grade in 2006-07. The woman says she complained about the abuse, but school officials didn’t stop it and, further, harassed her when he tried to home-school her daughter.

The girl was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for an eating disorder in February 2008.

The school district’s attorney wouldn’t comment on specifics, but says he will vigorously defend the suit.

The service was fast, the judgments even hastier. Never did Jacqueline Mercado imagine that four rolls of film dropped off at an Eckerd Drugs one-hour photo lab near her home would turn her life inside out, threaten to send her to jail and prompt the state to take away her kids.
Jacqueline Mercado, a 33-year-old Peruvian immigrant, took a few photos of her young children at bath time. A week later, Richardson police were rummaging through her house for kiddie porn, and a state child welfare worker came to take her kids away.
The photo in question: Jacqueline Mercado and Johnny Fernandez say they took this image last October to memorialize the breast-feeding stage of their son’s life. Below: The Lucca Madonna, painted in the 15th century by the Dutch master Jan van Eyck. Defense lawyers argued that while breast-feeding images are a second-degree felony in Richardson, they are also on public display in the finest art museums in the world.

For Mercado and her family, last fall was a happy time, one they wanted to record and save in the venerable tradition of the family photo. Johnny Fernandez, Mercado’s boyfriend, had just emigrated from Lima, Peru, ending a yearlong separation, and on top of that, it was their son’s first birthday.

The photographs they took over several days in late October included pictures of Fernandez reunited with the family at their modest home in suburban Richardson. Others captured their 1-year-old son Rodrigo, and 4-year-old Pablizio, from Mercado’s earlier marriage, playing in a neighborhood park. Using the camera’s timer, they also took three snapshots of themselves, naked in their bed. They arranged their bodies in ways that showed less flesh than most freeway billboards.

A half-dozen others recorded the kids at bath time. Fernandez took several photos of the boys “playing around,” naked and innocent, with the oldest flashing a big smile. Mercado, who says she often bathed with the kids, is in several of the shots unclothed from the waist up, holding her arm modestly across her bare chest.

In one–the photo that would threaten to send Mercado and her boyfriend to prison–the infant Rodrigo is suckling her left breast.

After Mercado dropped off the film for processing, a technician viewed the images and decided they were “suspicious,” according to a police report. As required under Texas law, he immediately contacted local police. Mercado says that when she went to pick up her pictures, the clerk told her there would be a delay, and then only returned three of the four sets of prints.

To Richardson police, who arrived at the store that afternoon and apparently made up their minds from the content of the pictures alone, this was nothing short of a felony case of child pornography. “We thought they contained sexuality,” says Sergeant Danny Martin, a Richardson police spokesman, explaining why two Richardson police detectives began pursuing a criminal case. “If you saw the photos, you’d know what I mean.”

With nothing else to support their contention that the photos were related to sex or sexual gratification, the police and theOn November 13, the day Richardson police “tossed” or searched Mercado’s house, a caseworker with the Dallas County Child Protective Services Unit of the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services took custody of the children and recommended to a family judge that they be placed in a foster home. The caseworker’s notes state that a supervisor, acting on the content of the photos alone, decided that “the children needed to be removed from their mother’s care.”

Her hard-rubbed eyes drooping with worry, Mercado says she told the caseworker, “Please don’t take our children. We love our children.” Dallas County District Attorney’s Office presented the photos to a grand jury in January and came away with indictments against Mercado and Fernandez for “sexual performance of a child,” a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The charges centered on a single photo, the breast-feeding shot. Fernandez and Mercado say they took it–although the child had ceased breast-feeding–to memorialize that stage of their baby’s development.

“We wanted to see if he would take it, and he did,” says Mercado, explaining through an interpreter that it was a spur-of-the moment notion to which they gave little thought. “Johnny never saw the child breast-feeding, so this was for memories. For us.”
In the months since, one of the couple’s most onerous problems has been resolved. In late March, a week after the Dallas Observer asked District Attorney Bill Hill about the case, he ordered the criminal charges against both parents dropped. “It has some gray areas to it, but it doesn’t rise to the level of a crime,” Hill said. He said justice comes from more than isolating facts and interpreting them in a way to make them narrowly fit into a criminal statute.

Still, at press time, child welfare authorities continue to maintain control of the boys, even though a lawyer appointed to represent them says he believes they should go home. In its latest legal filing, the state said it would not consent to releasing the boys until the couple jumps through more hoops, including a lie-detector test they must take at their own expense.

“They ripped out my heart,” Mercado says. “Even if we get them back, I don’t know how we’ll recover from what’s been done.”

“How could they accuse me of doing something with our own children?” says Fernandez, a lanky 35-year-old who worked as a hospital technician in Peru before embarking on his disastrous start in Texas. “How can they accuse us of being something we’re not?”

It wasn’t difficult at all.
