According to several tenants, the elevator in the three-story building stopped working in January and has functioned intermittently since. But Bowers said she wasted no time in refusing when workers with Connolly Properties, the company that owns this and 28 other apartment entities in the city, approached her with an offer to help her move out of her top-floor unit.
Bowers is one of dozens of tenants living in no fewer than 10 different Connolly apartment buildings who during the past two months have shared stories of what they are calling substandard living conditions in their homes. Despite living alone, Bowers continues to insist on trudging up and down the building’s stairs, even after going food shopping or doing her laundry at a pay facility several blocks away.

Connolly went on to clarify his comments by describing the company’s efforts to coordinate maintenance responsibilities at its more than 1,100 city apartment units, insisting that every complaint officials receive ultimately leads to a response.

“Not to belittle anyone’s issues, but sometimes people have a relatively minor issue and to them, it’s urgent, but we don’t get to it right away because we’re dealing with more urgent issues. We have to prioritize,” Connolly said. “But we do care about everyone’s issues, and we get to them as soon as is practically possible.”

Connolly even suggested tenants contact him personally if they have problems they believe are not being resolved.

“If they do have a problem, they should call, and we will address it,” he said. “If they don’t get through to someone or if they find that it’s never getting fixed, they should write a letter directly to me and I’ll make sure it gets fixed.”
